Local OCR and screenshot translation on Mac

Extract text from a screenshot on your Mac, review and copy it, then translate locally into Chinese, English, Japanese, French or Spanish with installed system language packs.

How to use it

  1. Take a screenshot with Control + Shift + A, then choose OCR on the toolbar before adding annotations, covering content, cropping or rotating.
  2. Review the recognized text in the result panel. Select text or copy the original; copying text keeps the screenshot open.
  3. To translate, choose Chinese, English, Japanese, French or Spanish as the target. Let the system detect the source language or select it yourself.
  4. Review and copy the translation separately. Escape closes the result panel; reopen OCR to return to this screenshot’s results, or choose Recognize again to retry.

System, permissions and privacy

OCR uses macOS Vision locally on macOS 14+. Translation requires macOS 15+ and installed system language packs for both languages; it does not require a cloud translation account.

If a pack is missing, use Open System Settings → Language & Region → Translation Languages, install the required packs, return to CaptureX and retry. CaptureX does not download models automatically.

Translation offers five target languages. The interface has seven languages; Korean and Russian interfaces default the translation target to English. Extracted text and translations are not written to History or diagnostics.

Limits, cancellation and recovery

After annotations, masking, cropping or rotation, extraction is disabled so hidden source text is not exposed. Start a new screenshot or reselect the region to extract again.

Empty recognition, recognition errors and copy failures can be retried. Cancelled or failed translation and language changes keep the original text available; there is no cloud fallback. Closing and reopening the panel retains results within the current screenshot session.

Save and share

Original and translated text have separate Copy actions. Text copying does not save an image or close the screenshot.

Check names, numbers and formatting against the image before using the text. Save or copy the screenshot separately when you need to share the visual source.
